This time of year can be very challenging. Over the years I have often felt this is a low point in the year with many struggles often surfacing. It is hard to view this as a time of renewal and starting new even though the calendar says January 1st. Maybe there is a reason for this.
If we turn to nature for guidance, this time of year is far from a time of starting over. This is a time of rest, reflecting, and slowing down. Think of how animals behave in winter. Think about what plants do during winter. It is an inward journey, saving up for the next season to come.
Now the next season to come, is a different story. It is a time of life, hope, action, and light. Perhaps if we reconnect with nature, we will find spring is a more natural time to start something new; to feel rejuvenated and ready for change. Many other cultures have taken a cue from Mother Earth, so perhaps there is something to learn here.
If you aren’t feeling ready to start fresh, or you don’t want this time of year to dictate what type of year you will have, maybe that is okay. I think I will take this time to savor moments of coziness and closeness and save my celebration of a new year for the vernal equinox.
